Bienvenidos a la clase de
español!!

Heather Hanewall de Rios
Spanish class
scheduling: Here at SHS, there is quite a demand for
Spanish classes. Thus, it is best for students to get into
Spanish I early so that they can continue with the language at
their leisure. However, it is strongly recommended that
students take Spanish I and Spanish II concurrently.
Otherwise, the lapse of time between classes makes it very
difficult for the student to remember past material and starts them
off at a disadvantage.
Period 1: Spanish I
Period 2: Plan
Period 3: Spanish II
Period 4: Spanish II
Period 5: English 10
Period 6: Spanish I
About me:
First of all, I know my name is really long, so I just go by Mrs.
Rios. My long last name is actually to carry on the mexican
way of keeping track of family lines. "Hanewall" is my maiden
name, "de" means "of", and Rios is my husband's last name.
Thus, in the end, I am Heather Hanewall de Rios.
I grew up on a farm in Southern Wisconsin and went to college at
the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. There I got my BA in
Spanish and English Education. I moved out to WA after
I graduated and began teaching English here at Sumner High
School. In the summers during college and after, I worked at
an immersion language village (or camp) in northern Minnesota
called "Concordia Language Villages- El Lago del Bosque
Bemidji." I realized just how important and helpful immersion
is for students to learn a world language after having worked
there.
I use many strategies from the camp to teach classes here at
Sumner.
My very favorite thing to do is travel. My husband and I are
both avid travelers and I have been blessed to have gone to many
countries. Some of my favorite adventures have been South
Africa (where I worked at a prison and swam with sharks) and a
backpacking journey through South America that lasted two
months. Also, since my husband is from Mexico, we have plenty
of opportunity to go there to visit family and explore
:)
