Welcome to Ms.
Helling-Christy's Site
![]() On this website, you will find information relating to the three courses that Ms. Helling-Christy (H-C) teaches: International Baccalaureate Junior English, Honors Sophomore English, and Sophomore English. ![]() About Me: This is my seventh year teaching English at Sumner High School. During this time, I have taught Sophomore English, Honors Sophomore English, Senior English, Poetry, Advanced Placement Language, and International Baccalaureate Junior English. Of the courses that I have taught, this year I am teaching my favorite (though I greatly enjoy teaching Poetry as well). Before teaching at SHS, I taught in Wisconsin, where I was raised and went to college as an undergraduate. I earned my undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Secondary English Education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. After moving to the great Northwest, I earned my Professional Certificate in Teaching from Pacific Lutheran University and then my Masters Degree in Multicultural Education from the University of Washington-Tacoma. When I am not teaching or going to school, I enjoy time with my family and time by myself. With my family, I love to travel, especially during our summer roadtrips to fourteen or more states. Our favorite spots include Sedona, Arizona; Yosemite in California; Moab, Utah; rafting in Colorado; and, of course, our week in northern Minnesota. We also enjoy camping in our beautiful new home-state of Washington. Of all the states to which we travel, there are none like Washington! When I am by myself, I enjoy running (I finished my first marathon last May:) and I absolutely love to read. Contrary to what many students assume, I don't love to read because I am an English teacher--I am an English teacher because I love to read. I also whole-heartedly embrace education. I believe that a day without learning is a day not fully lived. Okay, enough about me . . . ![]() (Guess which one I am . . . hint . . . I'm not tall:) |
